As a very powerful necromancer, John has the ability to sense the thalergy (life energy), thanergy (death energy), and souls of any living thing.

So! What does this mean?

This means that John can sense just about everything that goes on with a person physiologically down to the chemical processes. In Kenos, he's been heavily nerfed, and most of his powers are affected in a general sense by all the fun new energies present, which is a convenient handwave-y way of explaining why he doesn't have turbo knowledge about everything and everyone at all times.

The purpose of this page is a general opt-in where you can optionally share any details about your character that John might recognise and whether or not you want them referred to, etc.

This is mostly a reference for me, so be as detailed as you like because it's definitely fun for me to sprinkle things in hehe.

As a note, it is acceptable to say that John outright can't sense something too! There are several characters where We Just Don't Know, or it's otherwise more interesting to leave question marks, so feel free to mention if you want John to perceive someone as Eldritch Static or a migraine or something!

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: voryn is a dark elf and his garnet shard looks like a vertical third eye, so he's pretty weird looking, but john is used to that. voryn's soul has been corrupted by the literal heart of his universe's god of mischief, lorkhan. as the heart is almost eldritch in nature, vast and unknowable, an element of voryn's soul would now share this quality, as it drove him mad by lingering near it and tampering with it (smh). he has been made a god but has not yet woken up to that fact, so this divine essence would be an interesting detail for others to take note of. as for the substance of what his soul may look and feel like, i've been including in my tags that his energy/magic feels itchy like a skin rash, as he is closely associated with illness in canon. there are symbolic elements of music (most notably bells) and the ocean often associated with voryn's clan and the "blessing"/curse (read: disease) he afflicts people with during the course of the game. feel free to get weird with this because i certainly will!

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: LAUGHS NERVOUSLY..........................

So. Um. You know how some souls have been through the wringer? And separated from their body not once but then put into a new body? And then Severed again?

Akua's soul in particular was separated from her body at 13, when she put it into a Phylactery. He can probably sense and notice a lot of magical contingencies were worked into it that show "scars" of her work but are no longer present. (~~Her death plan was definitely to steal a baby's body if she got killed~~)(She did get killed and so her workings didn't help in the end 😞)

In addition, he's free to notice that she has already died twice before, once where her soul lingered for some time as a ghost trapped in an inanimate object. The second time was right before arriving in Kenos and has some uh. Effects. That are lying dormant. (She also had a new body after her first death, but since all of their bodies are regrown in Kenos, that's probably less obvious but he's free to notice that it was "housed" a second time physically! They magically regrew her body. The books Go Places.)

In addition, her soul bears the brunt of two "Names" (think of them as titles with Powers -- She was the Heiress and the Diabolist, and they are no longer present for her, but he can probably notice the uhhhh... effects of those) and a third that's half-formed and is essentially "blossoming" in her currently. It's might be of note since her new name of "Calamity" is a Name of Intercession on behalf of the Gods (Below) and so if you want him to notice that, you're free to! You can probably roll with some soul-magical/thalergical... residue. Weirdness. We can roll with things!

- He has no heartbeat, but he has a pulse and he needs to breathe, but a lot slower than a normal human needs to.
- Some? Weird? Thing? That seems to have assimilated most of the soft tissue of his heart and has taken its place.
- His body is a lot denser than a human's should be
- There is something very funky about his blood (do not ingest you will mutate into a monster...)
- There's something else in Byleth.
- Quick addition: Byleth has technically died, or, he was stillborn and brought to life. So. Yeah. Cherry on top of everything else.

ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS?: Byleth currently houses the soul of an actual goddess who's taking the longest power nap ever. While John can probs sense there is something there, probably not exactly what it is. Oh and Byleth can manipulate time...

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: First and foremost is, of course, John's relationship to the Eye. It's somewhat different in Kenos, as Oblivion destroyed the main "bodies" of the Fears along with his world prior to his arrival here. The piece of the Eye that remains entangled within his shard is an infinitesimal fraction of it (the part that had become a part of him after his becoming an avatar), dramatically limiting its overall strength and influence. If inspecting the composition of his soul and/or shard, it would be pretty obvious that there is another presence, bizarre and eldritch, within, it would give a strong impression of watching its observer back if scrutinized. Based on what the Boneturner says about his ribs, it seems that the eldritch power of the Eye has also saturated John on a physical level as well. So it probably just seems really weird? (Also speaking of the Boneturner and what's weird, I tend to assume he's still missing those two ribs that were pulled out of him, so that's probably... odd.)

Now, I was always under the impression that most avatars are essentially reanimated after a sort of "death" and then sustained by the power of their Fear, but some stuff in late Season 5 kind of challenged that assumption of mine. Regardless, he was pretty much dead for six months prior to making his decision to return to life as an avatar, so there's also that. I think he would certainly comes off as "alive" in a necromantic sense, though the thalergenic/thanergenic vibes might be super weird.

Also, since the Fears can't really exist without one another, he carries with him much smaller nascent versions of all thirteen of the other Fears, predominantly in the Marks they have left upon him but also in smaller part within the statements that have been inscribed upon him as the Archivist. None of these are really "active" as the Eye currently is, but he is essentially still primed and ready to once again act as the conduit to bring them back into the physical world in some way, shape, or form under very specific and ideal circumstances. Really, when I think about it from the perspective of the world of The Locked Tomb, I feel as though the Emperor would likely be able to recognize that John had been the subject of... something...? There could be some interesting comparisons between necromantic formulae and how rituals work in The Magnus Archives. Those are just my thoughts on the matter, however — you're more than welcome to use any of this information however you want!

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: At first glance, you could pretty safely call Liem "human-adjacent." His parents were both human, when they were alive. He looks mostly human, except for slightly pointed ears, and the long, pointy fangs, and the eyes with their black sclera. His skin is bloodlessly pale, as well, with greyish undertones on account of the fact that his blood is dark, red-tinted black.

The weirdness continues beneath the surface. Liem recently celebrated his 122nd birthday, and he hasn't even hit middle age. His heartbeat, metabolism, and other biological processes are markedly slower than what would be healthy for a normal living human. His thermoregulation is shit, which makes him especially susceptible to extremes in temperature. Additionally, his biological processes tend to get a little Fucked Up if he goes too long without consuming blood. We're talking auto-immune disorder leading to problems eating, problems sleeping, joint pain, fatigue, you name it. A blood-starved Liem is not a happy Liem.

Most weirdly of all, although Liem is definitely a living man, he is actually harmed by positive energy (in general terms, "life energy," which heals living things), and healed by negative energy (the opposite; usually, only undead creatures like ghosts and zombies are healed by negative energy). This has some weird implications for how his body actually functions and what's really going on there on a cellular level. Who knows how any of it actually works... your guess is as good as mine. But as a side-effect, he is highly resistant to life-stealing effects, like a succubus's life-draining kiss. Attacks of that nature straight up do nothing to him, up until the threshold is high enough that he just keels over and dies all at once. Go figure.

Edit: I forgot to mention, but if you feel like John's bullshit god necromancy would be able to sense shard location (and why wouldn't it?), Liem's shard is positioned in the middle of his chest.

EDIT 2 DAMN IT: Tacked onto all of the above, one of the powers Liem gained since arriving in Kenos is accelerated healing. So, although his metabolism is slow as shit, his rate of healing is actually pretty fast. Not lyctor fast by any means, but it's capable of healing serious wounds completely in only a week, so it's still definitely far above the norm.

Obviously, Set is a god. His divine power was sealed from him, leaving him at the level of a demigod, but he has been working to regain/retrieve his sealed divinity in Kenos. Recently, Meridian's upper echelon was able to reach into their timestream and basically pull the "thread" of his divinity into Kenos, in the form of his funky little mask! When he's wearing the mask, the sense of divinity coming from him is noticeably higher, but not overbearingly so. There's also a sense of, um, demon-ness in him. He's traditionally thought of as Ba'al/Beelzebub, but hasn't obtained that "domain". Yet.

We're working on that.

For the life/death energy, I guess the fact that he's not part of linear time/does not have a linear consciousness could apply? Because Ancient Egyptian myth was heavy on religious syncretism ( aka. "it's not contradictory, we just assimilated everything" ) and cyclical time/history, he has an innate sense that if someone says "oh you're the guy who fights apep", he won't have DONE that, but he will know on some intrinsic level that they're not wrong.

The last thing is that his soul is in shreds, with a flowering vine growing thickly through it! I'm sure John would be able to recognize this as some manner of accursed claim. The has the same spiritual signature as Set's soul itself, just. Fucked up in a horrible way, with the stain of the god of life upon it. ( There's a cute little dark flower in the middle of that mess that radiates Yima's energy and unique smell. ) EDIT: i guess john would sense the souls of thousands of agonized women worn in a curse around set's wrist too?? enjoy

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: Oh, the fun one.

Under all the armor, Bondrewd is organic. I ask that nobody be able to "see" what he actually looks like under his gear, since MIA has never published an official depiction of what he looks like, and technically it doesn't matter. Bondrewd is a ( former-ish ) human that offered his body/humanity to the Abyss, and has become a vagrant soul/consciousness as a result. In canon, he uses an Artifact called Zoaholic to basically body-surf by leaving portions of his soul in other bodies, then overtaking them, being reborn into their form and reassembling himself when his former body has been severely damaged or destroyed. His soul exists, it's just. Untethered? Eldritch? All the humanity was stripped out of it, which leaves him very Weird.

Sebastian is likely a big blob of “what the fuck”

Or more seriously, Sebastian is a demon and one with more Eldritch flavoring than horns and pitchfork. It’s likely very obvious that his apperance is not his real one (and I’ll get into that too below lol) and that he’s composed of literal darkness and shadow. He’s a shapeshifter that’s able to take whatever form he pleases. I’m not canon familiar, but just taking a guess, he’s going to be heavy on the death energy side of things! His food is souls, after all, though he also hasn’t eaten one for a while at this point.

But, since John’s sensory ability is pretty strong, he’d also sense some wack stuff about the human appearance that Sebastian takes on since while it is composed of flesh and blood, it’s also not exactly necessary! So Sebastian has blood and organs, but they’re all largely non-functional and are just for show more than anything else. It’d be weird if he was cut and didn’t bleed, etc.

At appearance/surface level it’s all “correct”, but the further detail it’s examined/sensed, the more “incorrect” it becomes. Sebastian needs to understand something to create it, and that includes his own form, which is then limited by medical/anatomical knowledge of his time period (1889). Needless to say, when you get down to chemical processes level, they’re going to be missing entirely because it’s not something he knows about/needs.

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: Silco is a perfectly normal human being. HOWEVER, since John can sense what's going on in a human body, there are probably a few particular things of note. His right hand has something of a "dead zone" about it (demon contract curse) that seems to have something particularly... funky about it. Like there's something both eldrich and blocking him from most details. Likely, if he has encountered Sebastian, it's easy to kind of get a sense that it's got some eldritch-esque energy similar to him.

But now to the more interesting stuff! Silco's got a lot going on with his eye in Particular. It's very clearly a source of pain for the man, but more than that, it's like. Extremely Polluted. Like it Does Not Look Right, so it's obvious, but it's also just like so old and settled at this point, but it's implied that it's getting worse over time (mostly in that his solutions seem to hurt him worse later in the series, I'm making a guess, but you know). Being a Shard-Bearer likely stopped most of the progression of the deterioration, but it is still actually progressing. He also has extreme scarring around the eye -- also clearly polluted -- even though he covers it with Makeup, John will likely be able to tell. I guess, lastly, is that he's got fucked up lungs. Like he's been smoking cigars since he was probably 10 or something, but on top of that, he was a child laborer in the mines, and he grew up in Zaun in the days before they had air scrubbers. So you know. He's got Extreme Lung Damage. Shit's fucked, he's a mess.

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: John should be able to realize Childe is human (or was), and that physically he pretty much works the same way. He's been "touched by the Abyss" in his world which is basically like some kind of primordial chaos void. It's associated with negative karma, evil gods, and where monsters/beasts that are not part of and are otherwise against the existence of humanity come from. The Abyss is extremely powerful but humans that are corrupted by the Abyss usually die, or become a monster (and also eventually die.)

My personal visual interpretation of the Abyss in Childe is black tarry goop with lots of eyes and you are welcome to be able to have John see it visually like that in some unique way or anything else if you prefer since it has no true canon form beyond void.

Childe can use the Abyss to turn into a powerful creature (he gets full "demonic" type armor, but I think it's supposed to be organic in some sense, and he gets physically larger stronger etc.) I don't know if John canonly can recognize something that has different forms or you have a headcanon for how he might, but you are welcome to have him realize that Childe has some kind of alternative form that is probably A Problem to deal with without it ever being mentioned.

If he can see souls, he should be able to tell that Childe's is way fucked up by something that isn't Zenith or Meridian related and has a strong grip of influence and power on him. My guess is his soul isn't weak, though, despite the Abyss actively trying to eat and devour his lifeforce. Can probably tell Childe is not meant to live for really long and has a shortened lifespan that gets shorter every time he use the Abyss and its power but also that there's clearly simmering weird at work stalling or compensating for that since the energy he uses probably would d ovoid r should hang been dead a while ago.

Probably hard to tell if the Abyss controls Childe or Childe controls the Abyss. He might be able to also tell that Childe's vision and his delusion are attached to his soul somehow and that they have some effect on his life/death energy too as well as how he wields elements. (He wears them on his belt. )

He's never used his Abyss Form in Kenos, and has no plans to ever let anyone know it even exists, but im sure it'll happen eventually! Therefore it's fair someone should probably find out or at least have a good idea to be Prepared for Something Unexpected from him when he gets backed into a corner before Childe actually uses it against anyone.

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: First and foremost, Zhongli is a god. Specifically he is a 6,000 earth dragon/qilin hybrid parading around in a mortal skin he fashioned for himself. He has picked up quite a few titles over the years but his main domains are: contracts, history, wealth/business, and martial capabilities which is slightly separate from being a war god, but close enough most of the time. In terms of god ranking, he is a very powerful god in his world, the eldest of the seven gods who ruled over the seven nations.

Where his heart would be (and now where his shard is located on his physical body), there is a weird cavernous empty space. It seems at some point, Zhongli was tethered to an even hire and more powerful divine being/collective but that connection has been recently and willingly surrendered.

If John can sense this, there is also a magical pact that exists between Zhongli and Lady Yima. Essentially, they have made a contract which is incredibly binding (at least on Zhongli's side).

ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS?: Nope.

CANON: Lord El-Melloi II Case Files (Fate/ universe)

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:
-- She is human, but she possesses a "dragon magic core" which basically means that she can generate massive amounts of magical energy. She isn't a mage/spellcaster, so the only way she uses this is in her physical movement and strength. It doesn't make a big difference in her everyday life, but when it comes to combat, etc., she's capable of superhuman speed, endurance, and explosiveness, and she can use magical energy to moderate her pain, healing, temperature, etc. John is free to notice when she's tapping into that extra energy.
-- Gaining this dragon core has halted Gray's aging process.
-- Except for her hair and the scar on her face, Gray's body is the same as King Arthur's (aka Saber, aka Artoria Pendragon of Fate/). As Mordred is an exact clone of King Arthur, this means Gray and Mordred technically look like twins (minus hair color) — their art styles just don't reflect that very well lmao.
-- Gray was a gravekeeper specializing in the extermination and handling of spirits. This honestly isn't expounded on very much in her canon, but if that becomes relevant, then maybe John can notice it! She's studied necromancy a bit as well, but only in terms of theory.

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:
An interesting blend of many flavors! Presently Dark and Lucien have yet to merge to completion, but when Dark is dominant, his canon states that there is a foreboding and omen-like Hell's harbinger quality to his soul. When faced with him, John should sense that Dark's half of the soul is an evil being with pacts to thousands of demonic gods. His soul is more than 4 centuries older than his current self, and has died and reincarnated multiple times, growing stronger and more powerful each time.

The other side of his soul, Lucien, is secretly the reincarnation of the fallen angel Lucifer from the Bible. As such, if observed, Dark's other half should exude a divine and holy presence, though it has been tainted by his banishment to Hell. All in all, John should sense that there are two distinct presences in Dark, despite the human body he's sealed within. He's the antichrist! 🎉

Since Lucifer is still actively attempting to conceal himself at this point, it would be nice if John sensed that the holy portion of Dark's soul is holding back its true power and trying to stay withdrawn from detection. Totally okay if John can detect this! Dark will not understand what any of it means, however, since the point of canon I've pulled him from has not revealed Lucien's true identity.

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:

He is a skeleton with zero physiological processes! But he's also not undead, as in like a reanimated skeleton. Fane is from a race of people that are truly immortal, so he never died in the first place. He was just locked in a tomb without magic for so long that all of his flesh fell off and rotted without the food/water/etc necessary to sustain it. :)

His life-energy/soul/whatever you want to call it is tethered to the skeleton, and I think because of his immortality, it would probably seem to be a much stronger bond than most anyone else. He has the Shard playing into it now obviously, but I feel like this would still be noticeable.

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:

first of all, that her soul and body do not seem to match! the soul that should belong to rudbeckia's body is absent, and in fact has died; the soul residing there now is someone else entirely.
the new soul has also died once before! 👍
there is something about her that feels similar to any sort of monster or demonic beast, which may not initially register but would be noticeable if comparing them side by side. the source of this is unclear, just that there is some kind of affinity or kinship there.
ruby's body possesses a "divine core" which seems to be a natural part of her, not a special addition – everyone has one, where she comes from. it's basically just innate magic that exists in her body by virtue of being a living creature. but there is something wrong with her core, and it seems to react badly to the presence of any magic or energy that could be considered holy, gradually wreaking havoc on the rest of her body. this is probably less noticeable at certain times, and much more apparent at others (e.g. when she's actively or close to suffering from a build-up of holy energy)

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:
✧ Rin was born with a high aptitude for magecraft. It is said that if an average mage is able to generate 25 units of energy, then Rin can generate 500 at her baseline and could hone herself to max out at around 1000.

✧ In her world mages usually only have an affinity for one element, maybe two if they're special, but Rin has the very rare capacity for All Five Great Elements (Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Ether/Imaginary).

✧ She now has two Magical Crests which aren't (usually) noticeable unless activated

✦ Original Magic Crest: A series of spells 'carved' into the body granting the holder access to knowledge and magic of their predecessors. This allows them to cast spells without incantations or to elevate simple curses like gandr into something so condensed it becomes a physical bullet. It is likened to an organ that must be transplanted in its entirety, and the crest on Rin starts at her wrist and winds its way upward to her elbow in rectangular spirals that look similar to motherboard circuitry. As the body is want to reject most forms of magic, the crest causes pain when implanted and puts constant strain on the body (which Rin takes medicine to mitigate and has been for most of her life).
✦ Aetos Implant: After John gave Rin's shard to Aetos the experiment that followed was an expansion of her magic crest. It picks up at the elbow and stretches upward over her upper arm and shoulder. The black parts are visible like a tattoo, and the blue parts only exist as a glow when activated. This crest specifically channels faction energy — enhancing it and making her more capable despite her low tier (though she hasn't learned any extra spells). It also holds onto a percent of her Discord (received in anyway) and that percent can only be offloaded unnaturally.

WHAT CAN JOHN SENSE ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: First and foremost: Amos is literally Just A Guy. Magic since coming to Kenos aside, he is a 100% normal human. There is nothing remarkable about him in any way.

HOWEVER, he is also a very heavily traumatized guy. There is something just plain off about him for a normal human, like his emotional development was heavily stunted, because it was! He buries his emotions because they just aren't worth the pain they'll cause in acknowledging them. Amos will claim he's emotionless — and he does genuinely believe this — but nah, they're there. He feels things. Buried, and muted, but very, very real.

The trauma is by and large the result of a long pattern of sexual abuse, which John is free to sense.

Also, if applicable: his real name is not "Amos Burton". That's actually identity theft!
